Ergonomics and You, in this new normal
What is ergonomics?
In simple terms, ergonomics can be explained as the interface between the work environs and the worker. It is perceived as a field that captures the interactions between humans and other constituents of a system, hence it is a system related concept that needs to be addressed through systems thinking.
The goal of ergonomics is to achieve a fit between workers and the work environment, such that the worker ensures a comfortable posture while carrying out the assigned tasks.
Ergonomics can be achieved through the designing of workstations, environs, job description, tools and procedures to fit the worker.
For those that perform routine jobs, it is not uncommon to be exposed to the risk of bad postures, back and eye aches, fingers and body pains. These symptoms are commonly associated with poor sitting postures while performing some jobs and executing tasks.
Essence of ergonomics in the new normal
Now let’s talk
about the “new normal” this is a season and era where several people are
working from home. In such times, you could discover that you tend to spend
more time working.
We have to be reminded to take some breaks as often as possible, practice what is called “technology breaks”, take your eyes of the screen be it your computer or any other mobile devices for a specified period of time.
Also, walks are much needed at this time, where you can breathe some amount of fresh air, listen to birds sing, and enjoy the warmth of the sun.
Five quick questions you need to repeatedly ask
Here are 5 quick questions you may need to answer to know how well you rate in the practice of ergonomics:
- 1. How well lit is your workspace?
- 2. How comfortable is your chair?
- 3. What is your screen distance (the distance between you and the screen of your device)?
- 4. Do your feet touch the ground while you’re seated and working?
- 5. How often do you take that few minutes technology break from the screen?
This write-up emanates from my recent experiences of some body aches due to prolonged period of sitting at work. It can help others prevent such experiences.
Some innovative ways available for ergonomic assessment range from the use of smart watches to other solutions such as those available on: briotix .com, and ergo-plus.com.
